Practical advice for a safe visit to Barsana during Lathmar Holi
I have been asked multiple times, it is safe to visit Barsana during Lathmar Holi? Should we head to Barsana and Nandgaon for Lathmar Holi? I have been to the region many times to play Holi. As in case of many other destinations Lathmar Holi has become only more popular and the locals realise it. So, does the government. There’s a huge frenzy of crowd on the days of Lathmar Holi. Yet, the festival come with its own problems. The most important on is security of tourists especially women during Lathmar Holi.
I have been to the region with my wife. Together we visited Barsana, Nandgaon and Vrindavan for a period of 4 days during the Lathmar Holi season. As a photographer I was exploring the region. Here’s what we did for safety during the festical. Basis the same one could decide on their own whether it is safe to visit Barsana during Lathmar Holi.
A) We made Vrindavan as our base and stayed there for the entire duration. We would visit nearby villages of Barsana and Nandgaon, but post the event return back to Vrindavan. Being the main town, Vrindavan has more facilities, and better connected to Delhi.
B) I felt Nandgaon was tougher for women to make their way past crowd compared to Barsana. In Nandgaon people play Holi at the main temple which is on the hillock. The chances of escaping crowd here ‘s limited. In Barsana, however people play Holi on streets and as such is more spread out.
C) A good strategy is reach the destination early on. This is advisable to not only escape from the crowd and rowdiness, but only to find a good spot to view Lathmar Holi and take images. At Barsana, we reached late and after a good amount of struggle found a favourable spot.
D) If you’re travelling alone, huddle with a group and make friends.
E) Of course there are the basics like carrying emergency numbers and safety items. There’s Uttar Pradesh police around but it becomes so crowded it is even difficult for locals not to get ruffled.
These were some of the practical measures we took while we were playing Lathmar Holi at Barsana. If you are looking for advice, or further details please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or comment here. Happy to help.
