Book recommendation : The Tao of Travel
The moment I saw it I had a hunch this might be a good one. And hence I could not withdraw my temptation of buying and going through this book. So many times we have read books on tales of travel and the exotic which encourages our curiosity to know and visit the place.
And once ,I go through an interesting book in travel, it tempts me to know even more . How about the traveller ? What he must be going through ? How many days did he travel ? What all did he carry ? Did he go all alone? Why travel in first place ? Extremely fascinating.
And this is exactly what this book suggests. Consider it as a primer to get a mini glimpse on the lives of famous travelers . For eg.
Bruce Chatwin travelled for nine weeks for his book “The Songlines” . Jack London slummed in London in 1902. It took Joseph Conrad to write his book.
Also expect to find reference to a lot number of fascinating and wonderful books ( many of which were unknown I my case due to limited knowledge ) on travel , from Claude Levi Strauss ‘s “Tristes Tropiques ” to James Fenton “In trouble again”. Sprinkled with quotes and thoughts by travelers/writers/explorers ,this is a wonderful read. Here ‘s a wonderful quote
“That night, as I lay wondering whether I would get sleep or explosion, I got the idea instead ,a man who could n’t make things go right could at least go. He would quite trying to get out of the way of life. Chuck routine .Live the real jeopardy of circumstance .It was a question of dignity ” -William least heat-moon
And here ‘s another
“Tourism is a mortal sin”- Werner Herzog
