the inner desire
Success to me means freedom of choice.
A few years back I choose photography as a career choice from the lucrative corporate career. A complete contrast of living. As a photographer I opted for journalism as I was more interested in the human condition. It ended up as a tough living. To succeed I realized one needed to opt for a need based life and not a want based life. Because of the profession I changed my lifestyle : this was in 2006 end I guess.A lot of time was spent on research, going on field to take pictures, saving pictures, reading , and writing across proposals. (Whoever has jumped in with a thought that photography is glamorous please think again). If you really want to do well and not be mediocre in the field all of the above and more is necessary. Your social life also takes a beating. But on the other hand you end up hanging with a lot of interesting and well travelled folks .
Since I loved to travel my savings ended up as travelling. This though made me a lot happier, wise and at ease . I lost a lot of mental baggage. In terms of health to I got back to running on a regular basis and became fitter. Since the means were meager it meant further economies of scale was required from my end . I became more efficient and planned my months pretty well. Of course a part of this planning ( time management, financial ) came from genes ( dad being an excellent planner) . Time has always been critical to me . That is something MBA teaches but entrepreneurship imbibes in you . To be the ” me I see is the me I will be ” time has to be your friend. And this has to be supported by folks, close friends and opposite sex. Your plans have to match with theirs if you want not only to be successful but HAPPY . Doing by yourself is not that fun anyways.
Slowly though from photography I got more inclined towards development and working on something more encompassing .For example poverty to me was seriously non acceptable. Poverty meant a complete lack of choice . By now those extra hours started to count .Management creeped in and with the desire to do just a bit more mixed into a heady potion .Things have not been a bed of roses till date but the journey has been exciting . Working and building organisations with real impact and business models is something that is quite exciting. Not sure how this finally will pan out but have realsied if one focuses on the following a lot could be achieved
a) Having a real inner desire and reason to pursue your chosen path
b) Lead by example
c) Invest in excellence by investing in people. Involve everyone to evolve .
possible ? I bet so….
