Born to Run-Emil Zatopek
So this year there has been quite a focus on running and fitness, mostly running especially after the Leh trip as between ourselves we found a bunch of friends who like running and try and find trails in Delhi over long distance running . By long distance I mean doing a jog of around 40 minutes-1 hour plus whenever and wherever we can ,as regularly as possible.
And now, most of us are reading a book called “Born to Run ” by Christopher McDougall ( The book talks about the joy of running for some people and a tribe called Tarahumara ) which in one particular chapter talks about Emil Zatopek.
I first heard about Emil Zatopek in Olympic classics that they showed on TV long timeback. One of the clippings was something like this
The book also shares a side of Zatopek that proclaims his love for running.
Zatopek was a Czech soldier who used to grab a flashlight and go off on twenty mile runs through woods at night. In his combat boots. In winter. After a full day of infantry drills.
When the snow was too deep, Zatopek would jog in the tub on top of his dirty laundry, getting a resistance workout along with clean tight whites.
Such is his sense of running that his love of life shone through every moment .
– excerpts from the book
Maybe that’s why Abraham Lincoln was a dedicated runner and Nelson Mandela a college cross country standout who ,even in prison, continued to run seven miles a day in a place in his cell !!
