Book Recommendation: Anjan Sundraman’s Stringer
I picked up a copy of Stringer by Anjan Sundaram excited by what might be the contents inside . Having met him a couple of years back and hear his fascinating story reminded me of how I departed from taking a conventional career path .The book is written from a narrative and observational style of journalism and revolves around Anjan ‘s life himself living in Democratic Republic of Congo .
It is a fascinating account of a short history span of the country. Anjan’s writing is lucid and his observations are wonderful. It gives you a travel lust to be settled in an unknown country and live there for a few years to eke out a living .
Post Stringer, I started rereading Kapuscinski’s Shadow of the Sun. This is the second time I am going through his book and like the first time reading any book by probably one of the greatest literary travel writers is a pleasure. He captures the sights, sounds ,smell and above all the way people live in Africa in most poetic ways as he crisscrosses through Africa. A must read travelogue .
