Access to Health : Photo Essay on Health facilities in India
The Community Health Center (CHC) is as busy as the adjoining local market in Paraspur Block* in state of Uttar Pradsh in India . Each CHC caters to thirty to forty thousand people in each block. Wednesdays are the busiest as new born mothers can also avail vaccination facility .
The CHC caters to the basic needs like OPD, general check ups, HIV test, consultation, trainings for ASHA** workers and so on for the population. The fees is subsidized and the CHC is maintained by the state government .
For serious cases one has to visit the district hospital in Gonda . A district such as Gonda has a population of one hundred and fifty thousand and comprises of eleven blocks including Paraspur . Other alternatives such a local quack do exist from village to village ,but the local population is now more inclined towards these facilities.
They don’t mind the long queues. It is a small price to pay for access to health . Though it will a while for operations and processes to streamline there’s always hope .
* By geography a state in India is divided into district which is further divided into blocks .
** ASHA workers from villages are locally trained by the various health bodies to provide door to door consultation and health facilities in villages .
