Block Printing in Bagru
Bagru is a small town near Jaipur. I have been hearing stories about block printing in Bagru past few years and sometime back tied up with one of the studios who were working in Bagru Prints for Everyday Rajasthan. So this time when we did road trip to Rajasthan, we made it a point to visit Bagru.
Did it disappoint us? No !! But our favourite part of visiting the town was to find a sweet shop in a nook and enjoy samosas and jalebis while chatting with the locals. But besides our lunch, which was super cheap, Bagru has been a wonderful experience. The locals were super nice and nearly everyone showed us how a Bagru Print could be done. So much so Jasraman kept in touch with Amit (whom we met) and managed to sell some of inventory to her close circle in New Delhi. I thought it might be a good idea to offer a print making workshop in Bagru once the lockdown is over and price it fairly.
Those who do it are called Chippas and the community has been passing the tradition of dyeing and printing past 400 odd years. There are multiple steps to making the final print but we won’t go into the details. Best to hear the experts themselves when one is in field. A hand blocked Dabu Print was perhaps the most famous in Bagru.
I personally liked the entire process as it felt raw and earthy at the same time. Perhaps the colours such as Indigo too were chosen wisely ,and made from natural fabrics. Or perhaps it was the entire process of Block Printing in Bagru, and the town itself. If you are keen in heading there, drop me a line and I can
